New Website to Record 1WAGS History in Ballarat

The Ballarat Branch of the Air Force Association (AFA) has taken the initiative in creating a website to record the names and other information about each of the airmen who trained at No 1 Wireless Air Gunners School (1 WAGS) at Ballarat Airport during the Second World War.

Over 5000 airmen completed their training at the school and over 1000 of these trainees were killed in action.  The airmen who were killed will be listed on a memorial page on the website.

Research for this project over many years was led by Immediate Past President of the Ballarat Branch (Dr Tom Roberts OAM) and support for the creation of the website (to be known as 1WAGS) has been provided by the City of Ballarat’s Community Impact Grants Program.

President of the AFA’s Ballarat Branch, Mr Noel Hutchins, is seeking information from the relatives of trainees or trainers at No 1 Wireless Air Gunners School.   Anyone with stories, photographs or other information that may be useful in the development of this project is invited to contact Noel Hutchins on 0439 929 322 or email noelhutch@bigpond.com.
