AFA Supports Rifle Company Butterworth Service Classification Claim

As a national and State-based based organisation that supports the wellbeing of former and serving Air Force members and their families, the Air Force Association also provides support when needed to former and serving members of other Services.

The Rifle Company Butterworth Group has sought the Association’s opinion and assistance with its request for a ‘warlike’ service classification to be afforded to the company’s stated period of service in Malaysia from 1970-89.

Rifle Company Butterworth was deployed from Australia to protect RAAF and other Australian assets at Air Base Butterworth under its current ‘peacetime’ classification. The Rifle Company Butterworth Group has made several unsuccessful submissions to Government to have the company’s service classification upgraded to ‘warlike’.

Based on the information available – and in the interests of those who served in the Rifle Company during this time - the Air Force Association supports an independent review of the deployment’s classification between 1970-89.  The President of the Air Force Association has written to the Prime Minister in this regard.
